Dancing With Breath: How I Reclaim Calm When Life Feels Heavy
Share
When life feels heavy, I don’t look for answers outside of myself first—I return to my breath. Breath is the most accessible tool we have for regulating the nervous system, yet it’s often the most overlooked. When stress activates the body’s fight‑or‑flight response, breathing becomes shallow and rapid. This signals danger to the brain, even when none exists.
Through intentional breathwork, I interrupt that loop. By slowing my inhale and extending my exhale, I activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the branch responsible for rest, digestion, and emotional regulation. This isn’t spiritual bypassing; it’s physiology. Studies in neurobiology consistently show that controlled breathing lowers cortisol, reduces heart rate, and improves emotional clarity.
What I’ve learned is this: calm is not something I chase—it’s something I cultivate. Breath meets me in moments of anxiety, overwhelm, and uncertainty. It teaches me that safety is not found in control, but in presence.
